Tu B’Shevat

We decided to celebrate the festival of Tu B’Shevat, along with the children from Jenny and Sara’s childminding services.

It is a time when trees are celebrated for the fruits that they bear.

So we decided to have a week of activities where we looked at different fruits from around the world.

We then thought of different ways we could eat them.

The first day we did research on the ‘tablet’ and printed out a fact sheet on Tu B’Shevat.

Then on the Tuesday we made some smoothies. We had three groups each with their special ingredients, one was a Super green smoothie, the second an orange and mango and the final a red berry.

Once they were all chopped and blended we then shared them around, tasting each one and deciding which was our favourite. Visitors and staff were included in the taste off each casting their votes.

Overall the orange and mango was the winner, but they were ALL very tasty indeed and provoked much conversation laughter and interest in what went into each recipe.

Another activity was making a ‘Summer’ Pudding. It was delicious and one tat many people remember from their past, recalling where they used to go to collect berries. Albeit from the hedgerow, allotments, farms or their gardens.

Then there was a competition to decorate two cheesecakes with fresh fruit. They were both wonderful and thoroughly enjoyed by everyone at lunch.

Finally there was a fruit quiz, and a name the fruit platter. These fruits were then made into an exotic fruit salad  and enjoyed as a dessert for Sunday lunch.

What a fantastic week we had.
